Editor’s Note (Updated August 2025):
This blog post has been updated to reflect the latest rules around AI-generated modeled images. Read the new section below before generating visuals for your listings—some tools and techniques have changed.

If you’re serious about leveling up your reselling game on Poshmark, eBay, or any online marketplace, then listen up: AI-generated modeled shots are the secret weapon you didn’t know you needed.

I’m Isa Diaz, your no-nonsense, business-savvy older sister who’s been in the reselling trenches—and now I’m here to help you work smarter, not harder. Forget spending hours posing, snapping, and editing product photos that still don’t look quite right. Big retailers like H&M and Zara are already using AI to create professional modeled shots. And guess what? This tech is finally available to us little guys, leveling the playing field like never before.

But hold up—before you start pumping out AI images the way Poshmark pumps out unnecessary features, there are some golden rules you need to know to get the best results, avoid costly mistakes, and stay on the right side of the law.

⚠️ UPDATE: AI-Generated Modeled Shots Just Got New Rules

Before you start creating that dreamy editorial campaign for your Poshmark closet using AI, let’s hit pause. As of August 2025, there’s a major shift in how platforms (like OpenAI and others) allow AI to generate images of humans.

The short version? Hyper-realistic modeled shots of real-looking people are no longer allowed.
Here’s what’s going on and what it means for your resale business:

❌ What’s No Longer Allowed

You can’t upload a real person’s photo (even yours) and ask the AI to create an art version.

You can’t generate images of recognizable public figures.

You can’t create ultra-realistic model shots that could pass as real people.

These changes are about privacy, deepfake prevention, and copyright protection—aka, keeping AI ethical and above board.

âś… What You Can Still Do (and Do Well)

  • Generate stylized, editorial, or faceless model shots for your product listings.

  • Use mannequins, hands, silhouettes, or abstracted figures wearing your item.

  • Create illustrative mockups for unbranded, non-logo items.

This still gives you massive creative freedom—just with a little more intention and a lot less legal risk.

Isa’s Pro Tip

Keep your visuals focused on style and fit, not identity. A faceless woman in a floaty kaftan still tells a story. Editorial silhouettes? Mood for days. This is your chance to level up without tripping up.

(Updated tips still apply, just work within the new style boundaries.)

Why AI-Generated Modeled Shots Are a Game-Changer for Resellers

Save Time and Energy: No more scheduling models, setting up lighting, or endless photo shoots. AI does the heavy lifting so you can focus on sourcing and selling.

Get Retail-Quality Photos: Crisp, professional images that catch buyers’ eyes and boost conversions.

Stand Out on Poshmark, eBay, and Beyond: Beautiful, consistent product visuals help you sell faster and for more.

Stay Competitive: Big brands are using AI—why shouldn’t you?

The Top 5 Tricks for Creating Stunning AI-Generated Modeled Shots

1. Be Precise with Your Prompts

Vague prompts = vague photos. Tell the AI exactly what you want: fabric type, color, pattern, fit, lighting, and background. The devil’s in the details, queen.

Example:
“Woman wearing a fitted red tartan plaid wool jacket with black and white stripes, studio lighting, white background.”

2. Use Reference Images When Possible

If your AI tool lets you upload a photo of your actual item, do it. This stops AI from guessing and mixing up your plaid with some random pattern it’s “seen” before.

3. Call Out Key Features

Buttons, zippers, collars, length, fit—don’t leave out anything that makes your product unique. This is how you get images that look like your item, not just a jacket. The actual brand might have description bullet points on their site, which makes it much easier.

4. Test, Tweak, Repeat

AI is brilliant but it’s not psychic. Try multiple prompt variations, add or remove details, and iterate until you get the shot that makes you want to say “Yes, that’s it!”. It won't give you the perfect images the first time or every single time, but it learns as it goes and gets better with time.

5. Keep It Simple (But Detailed)

Too many conflicting details confuse the AI. Keep prompts focused and consistent, so you don’t end up with a leather jacket that somehow looks floral.

Common AI Image Problems & How to Fix Them (Plaid Jackets, I’m Looking at You)

Ever upload a plaid jacket and get a totally different plaid pattern? AI doesn’t know your tartan—it guesses from its training data, which can be wildly off.

How to avoid:

Specify exact plaid types (tartan, gingham, Madras).

Describe color combos and pattern scale precisely.

Upload a clear reference photo if you can.

Legal Pitfalls Resellers Need to Know About AI-Generated Images

Using AI to create images of branded items or with trademarked logos can lead to serious trouble: trademark infringement, copyright violations, and banned accounts on marketplaces.

Quick rundown:

Don’t use AI to generate images with visible logos or recognizable brand designs.

Avoid using AI images that closely mimic existing copyrighted photos.

Always check marketplace rules—some platforms restrict or ban AI-generated images without disclosure.

Be honest with your buyers; don’t misrepresent your products with unrealistic images. You could add a disclosure like this (this is just an example)

"Please note: The cover photo is AI-generated to give you a general idea of the fit, style, and look of the item. Actual product details—such as colors, patterns, and textures—may vary slightly. For exact details, please refer to the actual photos provided."

Where to Use AI-Generated Modeled Shots (And Where to Be Cautious)

Perfect for: Creating lifestyle or modeled shots of generic or unbranded items, clothing basics, accessories, and even mockups for listings.

Use with care: When selling high-end brands or trademarked products—stick to original photos or get legal advice.
