5 Proven Ways to Build Consumer Trust and Grow Your Resale Business
Building consumer trust is essential for creating a successful resale business. It doesn’t matter how great your product is—if your customers don’t trust you, they won’t return, and you’ll miss out on lifelong clients. In this guide, I’m sharing 5 actionable strategies to build trust with your ideal consumer and turn one-time buyers into loyal customers. Let’s dive in!
1. Define Your Ideal Client
To build trust, you need to know who your target customer is. Ask yourself:
- What does my client do for a living?
- How much does she earn?
- Does she have kids, and where does she live?
Understanding your audience helps you tailor your branding, communication, and product selection to her needs. For example, I cater to women aged 28-55 who spend $500-$2,000 on a purse. My branding is feminine, earthy, and appeals to that demographic. The key? Always shop with your ideal client in mind.
2. Nail Your Presentation
First impressions matter. Your store’s presentation tells a story about your brand. Think of high-end retailers like Nordstrom—does their environment inspire confidence and trust? You want your online store or platform to do the same.
Clear, high-quality images, cohesive branding, and detailed product descriptions make a difference. Showcase your items authentically while highlighting their best features.
Pro Tip: If you’re selling designer items, your customers should feel like they’re buying from an expert. Consistency in presentation builds trust.
3. Be a Brand Your Customers Trust
Before your business becomes a household name, you are your brand. Customers buy from people, not just businesses. Introduce yourself on your platform. Share your expertise and experiences to establish credibility.
When I started including my face and personal story on Instagram and Poshmark, trust levels skyrocketed. Buyers felt more connected to me, and my sales increased. Remember:
- Show your professional side when interacting with customers.
- Be transparent about your products and processes.
- Avoid behaviors that could diminish trust, like promoting counterfeit items or low-quality goods.
Pro Tip: Your online presence—from your bio to product listings—should communicate trustworthiness and professionalism.
Homework: Know What Builds Your Trust
Grab a notebook! List the reasons why you trust your favorite brand or influencer. What draws you to them? Is it their presentation, consistency, or the way they tell their story?
Now, compare your business. Are you using the same trust-building techniques? If not, start incorporating these strategies today.

One of my favorite Instagram influencers is a married to a man she loves and is a mom to 5 Kids. Just these two facts alone (mom and wife) make me give her a lot of trust. Couple that with a cute fashion sense and I’m sold. Hahaha I realized how easy it is to sell to me 😂
